The Ghost of Poland Maine.

Fall is in the air. The nights are getting cooler and the air just a little bit crisp and Halloween is just around the corner. What a wonderful time of the year. I love Halloween for the crazy decorations, my kids in costumes, and the thought that maybe for just one night people that have passed may still roam.

One such place that ghosts still roam is on Route 26 in Maine. The story goes that there is a woman who will appear on a stretch of this road between New Glouscester and Poland. She is reported to be wearing a long white billowing dress. If you give her a ride she is said to always give you prophetic advice that is always beneficial. This woman is reported to be the wife of George Knight.

The story goes that Mrs. Mary Knight was at home with her aged mother-in-law and two children. Mrs. Knight's husband had gone over to a neighbor's home with a load of shingles. Mary and the family went to bed as normal. Mr. Knight still hadn't returned from his trip to his neighbor's house. At some point Mary went to go lay down with her mother-in-law. Who was apparently very hard of hearing. Around midnight, Mrs. Knight was awoken by groans and moans and felt Mary's arms fall on her. Mr. Knight's mother ran into the room adjoining her in a panic. The room was occupied by a boy of 10 who had heard the disturbance as well. They woke up the Knight's adopted daughter of 13. The trio afraid to open the bedroom door, sent the boy to their neighbor's house. Not the one, Mr. Knight had reportedly gone. When Mrs. Rice, the neighbor, arrived they lit a lamp and proceeded to open the door. Needless to say they entered into a horrific scene. Poor Mary laid in a pool of blood with her throat slit from ear to ear with a pillow over her face. Ultimately, Mary's husband was tried for the murder.

This murder happened in October of 1856. In fact, this incident was so shocking that the New York Times ran the story http://query.nytimes.com/mem/archive-free/pdf?res=F10F1FFF3B5D147493C0AB178BD95F428584F9.

Now, in the "ghost hunting" world the main reason people, or spirits, continue to roam this world is due to the manner in which they die. If the death is sudden or violent haunting is more likely. Or if the spirit feels they have unfinished business. If these are the necessary requirements to make someone stay around after they have passed Mary Knight certainly meets all the requirements. Maybe, the reason she roams this stretch of road near her home is so that she can give fair warning to people to change their lives.

Thank you! I was fascinated by this family. I wonder what motivated the husband to commit this crime.

I find this subject to be totally fascinating, and you did a great job Lindy of explaining why this ghost still roams the roadway. I'm thrilled to be the second comment here on your hub. I have put a link from your hub to my own ghostly hub, "which has become known as Ghost Central". Hopefully you'll get some more traffic this way to all of your hubs. If you don't like the link, then just please let me know, and I will remove it for you. Keep on hubbing.

Thank you Goody for the comment, the follow and the link. Every time I drive through this stretch of road in the dark I can't help but wonder if I will see Mrs. Knight.
